A. WHO I AM
those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ. Jude v1
a. I will remember I am a child of God, called to, loved in and kept for Jesus Christ, so my identity and security are in Him, not position, privilege, possessions or performance.
b. I will not boast about or inflate my abilities, achievements, titles, or credentials, but will take every opportunity to turn attention, praise and glory towards the Lord Jesus.
c. I will resist temptations to compensate for hardships and discouragements through sinful indulgence in sexual, governance or financial malpractice or deceit.
d. I will crucify selfish ambition and rivalry in me, refusing to be ensnared in comparison, competitiveness and covetousness or to speak or act from jealousy and envy.
e. I will seek to ensure that I am the same person in every aspect of my life and that my times of leisure, rest and holiday – as well as my work – are honouring to Christ.
be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Romans 12 v2
a. I will set my mind on Christ rather than myself, offering myself to God and seeking the renewal of my mind by the Holy Spirit, so that I serve others for Christ’s sake.
b. I will rejoice in the Lord Jesus and in His people, remembering that the Holy Spirit grows joy (chara) in us as we respond with gratitude (eucharistia) to God’s grace (charis).
c. I will actively seek fellowship by serving and being served as part of a church, investing time and energy in friendships, and serving in partnership, not alone, whenever possible.
d. I will prioritise character over charisma in my assessments of self and others and will resist temptations to perfectionism, people pleasing or productivity at others’ expense.
e. I will seek to promote and maintain unity in truth and love in community, refusing to harbour resentment or grudges and not avoiding people from discomfort or jealousy.
B. HOW I THINK
The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve. Mark 10 v45
a. I will aim to work hard in the Holy Spirit’s power, stewarding my gifts and resources for the Lord Jesus and resisting temptations to self-promotion and self-protection.
b. I will learn to acknowledge my weaknesses without shame, receive encouragement without pride, and celebrate and report the successes of others without envy.
c. I will steward my energy within my limits, serving generously without neglecting my family or my own wellbeing and taking regular time for rest, recreation and refreshment.
d. I will not take responsibility for outcomes beyond my control, trusting God to bring the changes only He can bring, and will learn to say no to requests when I reach my limits.
e. I will listen carefully to warnings from those who are closest to me about risk and signs of burnout, ill health, or addictions, and will stop and seek help when they say I should.
4. I will seek to be self-aware, open and repentant
walk in the light, as he is in the light. 1 John 1 v7
a. I will regularly ask God to search my heart, revealing and transforming my attitudes, desires and motivations so I serve from love and joy, rather than insecurity and fear.
b. I will aim to regulate my emotions and to moderate extremes in my personality, so that my words and decisions are measured, thoughtful, and patient towards others.
c. I will be transparent about finances, ensuring all gifts and remuneration are properly recorded and reported and money is administered transparently and honestly.
d. I will ensure that every habitual sin, struggle, doubt or temptation in my life is known to at least one other godly person, including my spouse if I am married.
e. I will repent and confess any failures to live by these standards to affected people and accountability partners, taking measures to restore harm and prevent future failings.
C. HOW I SPEAK
Speak the truth with your neighbour. Ephesians 4 v25
a. I will commit to absolute honesty, not relying on my memory or intuition, but testing my ideas against God’s word and seeking an accurate understanding of people and events.
b. I will take care in teaching and giving advice to differentiate between essentials and non-essentials and to distinguish God’s Word from my ideas, impressions or interpretations.
c. I will speak truth that builds others up, taking care not to share truths others cannot bear or to distort narratives by lying, selective truth-telling or omission of significant details.
d. I will not operate from hidden agendas, but will seek to express my views, hopes, and ideas clearly and openly to all who need to understand them in order to make decisions.
e. I will speak truth in humility in situations of conflict, not allowing fear of people or personal consequences to stop me from doing so, especially when others are at risk.
Outdo one another in showing honour Romans 12 v10
a. I will hold things people tell me in confidence, not sharing them with others without permission unless it is necessary to do so for legal or safeguarding reasons.
b. I will seek to describe the views and actions of others – especially those who disagree with or differ from me – fairly, without interpretation or speculation on motives.
c. I will not gossip or say things about people that contradict what I have said to them, that I would be ashamed of if they found out, or that are based on hearsay or rumour.
d. I will speak directly to people about concerns before escalating, as required by Scripture (Matthew 18:15), except when safeguarding processes or advice say I should not.
e. I will not give distorted appraisals, feedback or references about people or influence decisions about others by voicing concerns they have no opportunity to respond to.
D. HOW I ACT
It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20 v35
a. I will acknowledge the power I hold and use it to equip others and protect the vulnerable, never for dishonest gain or to coerce, manipulate or pressurise people.
b. I will seek God’s will when making decisions, considering biblical truth, the reputation of the gospel, the interests of all affected parties, and the impact on creation.
c. I will not show partiality but will pay attention to all people and seek fairness for them, regardless of status, personality, wealth, or anything I can gain from them.
d. I will declare my interests in decisions, recuse myself from discussions when conflicted, and aim to ensure I am never the sole gatekeeper to opportunities for others.
e. If I hold founding, long-standing, charismatic, or relational influence, I will take particular care to ensure my voice does not dominate processes or overshadow others.
equip the saints for the work of ministry. Ephesians 4 v12
a. I will invest in teaching, training, encouraging and releasing others to serve joyfully as the Lord has gifted and leads them, so that leadership and service are shared, not hoarded.
b. I will seek to work in an interdependent team of godly and gifted people with diverse personalities, experiences and interests, sharing collective responsibility for decisions.
c. I will work with others to ensure truth and grace are valued, gospel vision transcends personal interests, and that all people with an interest in a decision are heard directly.
d. I will submit to people with legitimate authority over me, sharing my thoughts honestly and enacting their decisions without grumbling unless conscience forbids it.
e. I will relinquish power when a role ends or when continuing to hold it would be self-serving or harmful to others and will invest in succession planning whenever possible.
E. HOW I DEVELOP
In an abundance of counsellors there is safety. Proverbs 11 v14
a. I will commit to lifelong spiritual, theological, and moral formation, seeking truth and wisdom from all available sources, subject to Scripture and prayerful reflection.
b. I will regularly seek feedback from people over, alongside and under me, receiving it non-defensively, reflecting and acting on what is true and will never attempt to silence critics.
c. I will seek godly people who are willing and able to hold me to account for my actions, words and attitudes, and will share honestly with them without evasion or excuses.
d. I will habitually seek advice on major decisions from wise people with no personal stake in the decision to help discern God’s will, test my motives, and anticipate likely impact.
e. I will aim to recognise when my conduct, capacity, or circumstances mean I should no longer serve in a role and will accept the verdict of those with authority to decide on it.
All things should be done decently and in order. 1 Corinthians 14 v40
a. I will seek to work within transparent best-practice policies and processes in all areas, including safeguarding, finance, recruitment, disciplinary action, and complaints.
b. I will not allow policies to become excuses for laziness, lack of love or selfish interests, but will welcome robust policies as a minimum standard to protect me and others.
c. I will aim to ensure governance oversight by godly, compassionate people committed to relational, legal, and procedural excellence, with an independent right of appeal in disputes.
d. I will submit myself to processes concerning complaints about me, disclosing any relevant information, and seeking to apply the outcomes in concrete measures.
e. I will not ignore or cover up concerns about leadership or governance failings due to loyalty to people or institutions but will ensure concerns are addressed fairly.
